Maintenance and advancing technology
As autumn looms, it’s time to start planning your next move – are you heading to the Caribbean to ride out the winter, or heading into the yard for your next maintenance check? Whether you’re after systems updates or a major overhaul, it’s worth considering what hardware you currently have on board, its age, and whether it’s time to look at making replacements.
Take a look at your current mobile phone; how long have you had this particular model? Do you think you’ll still have it in 5 years’ time? If you’re anything like the majority of the market then the answer to that question is definitely a no. Five years is a pretty long time – it’s how long ago the UK voted for Brexit; the US voted Trump in as president despite the release of that video; and was officially the year the music died as we lost legends such as David Bowie, Prince, Leonard Cohen and George Michael to name a few. In short, 5 years seems like an eternity ago: 2016 was the year the iPhone SE was first released, and we’ve had 9 further iterations of the iPhone since then. There’s no denying that technology, like life, moves pretty fast, and nobody wants to get left behind.
It’s also worth noting that no previous versions except the iPhone 12 support 5G, nor will they. So, if you want to take advantage of the fastest network to date, you have no choice but to upgrade your mobile phone. The same applies across the board; if you want your VSAT hardware to continue to deliver high bandwidth connectivity, it’s only a matter of time before you’ll need to upgrade.
Connectivity is key
If we’ve said it once, we’ve said it a thousand times – it’s never been more important to ensure your internal comms are operating to maximum capacity. As the pandemic has seen more and more of us move towards the working from home lifestyle – or, in this industry, working from sea – high performance and reliable connectivity is ever more crucial. Even when you’re loaded up with guests and crew in a busy yachting destination, getting the most out of your bandwidth is always crucial.
